Colearner Catch-ups: Jeslyn Low, Singapore Community

July 23, 2019

Jeslyn Low, a Singapore colearner shares how she sees the ability to learn as a privilege.

Tell us about yourself

I’m currently in my third year of working as a workplace designer. I’m also pursuing a part-time course in lighting design apart from Newcampus. I enjoy urban sketching, painting and basking in the sun during what’s left of my free time. A huge Archie comics nerd, it inspired me to start sketching in the first place!

What motivates you to be a lifelong learner?

I was never great at academics when I was younger and I pretty much hated learning as I was never good at it. I only started to enjoy learning once I figured out how to combine my love for sketching with my school topics. After that “eureka!” moment, I started seeing education as something approachable and the ability to learn as a privilege.

What inspires you creatively, spiritually or emotionally?

Being able to enjoy what I do every day as a job inspires me! I love workplace design! People often mistake interior designers as someone who puts together pretty materials, but that could not be further from the truth. I enjoy the planning and method that goes behind designing a truly effective workspace. Seeing it come together in real life is satisfying!

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

I would like to be an urban planner if I could. Seeing things come together on a macro scale sounds even more exciting!

What’s a new thing that you learnt this week? It could be a blogpost, a book, an idea, podcast or anything! Do share a link, if there is one.

I recently read this article about trends that are driving the movement on sustainability.

Also, enjoyed this good read- Confessions of a Radical Industrialist: Profits, People, Purpose — Doing Business by Respecting the Earth by Ray C. Anderson and Robin White. You can find it on Amazon here.

What’s the next thing you want to learn more about?

I would like to learn about advertising and what makes a good copywriter.. good!
