Shopback

The ShopBack Group is the leading e-commerce platform in the Asia-Pacific region, providing shopping, rewards, and payments to over 38 million shoppers across ten markets. Founded in 2014 and employing over 1000 people across Southeast Asia, it is one of the region's most successful tech companies and startups.

Growth of new people managers not feeling equipped and confident to lead teams

In recent years, Shopback has grown its headcount exponentially as the e-commerce industry boomed in the pandemic-driven environment. With this growth, various teams needed to promote a large volume of their high-performing individual contributors into first-time managers. These managers suddenly have a new set of leadership responsibilities and no experience or training to support them.

“The significant growth of my team has forced me to build a more robust framework to assess and develop their leadership capabilities." - Head of Operations.

Shopback's Head of Operations took the initiative to work with their HR team to send their operations managers to a Management Essentials program by NewCampus.

A more practical way to equip people managers with the skills and confidence to drive team performance.

Shopback decided on seats in NewCampus's Management Essentials public sprints. They chose it after comparing it with other options, as it was a timely and practical training solution that also had the additional benefit of helping their managers extend their professional network beyond their company.

Remote first delivery

The operations team was spread across different countries within the APAC region. It was important for them that the training solution could be delivered virtually to accommodate this. With implementation and onboarding conducted by NewCampus remotely, minimal resources were needed from Shopback's end. This also gave their managers flexibility on which cohort to join throughout the year.

Live learning experience

Engagement has always been a challenge for online learning, according to Shopback's experience. However, Management Essentials has been a new and engaging experience for their managers in three ways:

  • The cohort-based program created a sense of camaraderie as well as accountability with learners not just from their company

  • Having a professional coach conduct the program created a tailored and practical experience for each learner

  • Workshops designed with the learner experience first created a safe space for learners to practice leadership and management techniques

Leading in Asia

One of the biggest challenges of management training is that it can be too academic or not culturally relevant. Shopback is a business that was launched less than 10 years ago, disrupting an industry in the process. It is also doing this in a very unique region of the world, with its own cultural nuances and employee diversity.

Management Essentials was built with hyper-growth companies in mind. Our case studies, exercise briefs, and learners are curated with this in mind. Our coaches have extensive experience facilitating and coaching a diverse cohort of learners across different regions in APAC, as well as in different industries.

Conclusion

A proactive approach to people and culture problems

The program experience was rated an average of 9.2 by Shopback's managers, and it had a 100% attendance record. The average confidence rating, which was measured before and after the program, increased by 60%. The feedback highlighted that the managers found the learnings to be immediately applicable to their work. They also enjoyed learning from other managers across different industries and building new relationships that extended beyond the cohort.

It improved the way I communicate with my team, it inspired me to consider why type of leader I want to be, it positively changed my attitude towards what it means to be a manager. Thank you so much to the NewCampus team for such a lovely sprint. Your guidance truly helped make this a meaningful experience for me.” - Operations Lead, Shopback (KL)

By partnering with NewCampus, Shopback was able to get in front of potential people problems created in this high-growth phase by equipping their new managers with alignment on frameworks and confidence.
